Hooks & Lures
  1. Why do I need a lighter hook?
Your live bait is carrying the weight of the hook as it swims through the water. If you use a lighter hook, your live bait will live longer and swim more naturally.

  2. Why are Emperor Tackle hooks lighter than standard hooks?
Our hooks are lighter because we use only stainless steel. A stainless steel hook will always be lighter than the same size standard steel or iron hook. Not only is stainless steel a lighter material than standard steel or iron, but the strength of stainless steel allows us to use a thinner gauge for the same size hook.

  3. Why are Emperor Tackle hooks stronger than standard hooks?
Our hooks are stronger because they are made with the very best 400 series stainless steel. Not only do the physical properties of stainless steel make it much stronger than standard steel or iron hooks, but stainless steel also has properties of elasticity, which means that it will maintain its form and not break even under heaviest of loads.

  4. Why not just stainless steel hooks? Why do I need gold plated stainless steel hooks?
Stainless steel by itself is extremely rust and corrosion resistant. In nature, when stainless steel is exposed to oxygen, it forms a natural passive film coating that protects it from rust and corrosion. However, when stainless steel is placed in salt water, the chlorides in the salt water attack this passive film coating, exposing the stainless steel to rust and corrosion. Gold plating the stainless steel protects it from these corrosive and rust-producing chlorides. With Emperor Tackle hooks, you get not only the strength and lightness of stainless steel, but also the most rust and corrosion resistant hook on the market.

  5. How much longer do your hooks last than comparable hooks?
Depending on the hook you are comparing it to, our hooks will last anywhere from three to twelve times longer. For example, our hooks have lasted up to twelve times longer than standard nickel plated iron hooks when placed in water with the same salt content. When compared to uncoated stainless steel hooks placed in water with the same salt content, our hooks have lasted up to four times longer.

  6. Do your hooks attract fish?
All predatory fish respond/react to light flashes reflecting off the scales of distant schooling bait fish. There is nothing more reflective than the shine of gold, creating flashes that predators see from further away. Improving the range of bites seems to be the most serious reason why some of Emperor Tackle hooks report they improve their catches.

  7. Won’t the gold chip off the hook if I remove it from a fish with pliers?
We electro-magnetically plate our stainless steel hooks. They do not chip, and it takes a tremendous amount of force to scratch the gold down to the stainless steel with pliers. We use regular pliers to remove our hooks from fish all the time. We don’t recommend using cutting pliers to remove any hook.

  8. Aren’t your hooks a lot more expensive?
Not when compared to regular stainless steel hooks. Remember, stainless steel hooks are the lightest and strongest hooks on the market. However, if they are not protected with our gold plating, they will rust three to four times faster.

  9. Aren’t hooks supposed to dissolve to help save fish?
There is no such thing as a “dissolving” hook. “Dissolving” hooks are a marketing creation. All hooks rust and corrode in water. When hooks rust they produce toxins. It appears that it is these toxins that get fish sick, disturbing them from breeding, when that does not kill them.

  10. Do you plan on offering any hooks specifically for use in freshwater?
We already offer freshwater hooks. But we will soon be offering worm hooks for use with soft plastic baits. Please check back with us soon.

  11. Can even a gold plated hook rust in saltwater?
In the natural environment of the ocean, and due to contact with fish meat there might be an organic slime deposit that would remain if you do not rinse them after use. Then this would be a thin orange film which is actually an organic thin crust you simply remove wiping your hook with freshwater. If cared for properly actual rust will not appear for a very long time like months.

  12. What will happen if I don’t rinse my hooks after I use them?
It is a good idea to rinse all your equipment with clean, fresh water after you use it, particularly if you fish in saltwater, especially hooks exposed to organic material. If you do not rinse your hooks, a thin brown film may build up due to contact with bait or fish meat. This film is easy to clean by rinsing the hook with clean, fresh water and wiping it with something non-abrasive. If you take care of your hooks like you take care of your other equipment, you will enjoy using your Emperor hooks for months and your tackle box will remain clean much longer. If you wait too long to rinse and clean your hooks, this film will be harder to remove, affecting the brightness of the hook. If this happens, you can still recover your Emperor hooks. Just rinse the affected hook in fresh water and brush the oxidation off with hard plastic bristles. We highly recommend caring for all your equipment in this way.
